About Alesha Dixon

Alesha Dixon Biography

Mis-teeq, a female vocal quartet comprised of Alesha Dixon, Su-Elise Nash, Zena McNally, and Sabrina Washington, caught the UK by storm with their first hit, "Why?" in 2000. The record started out as an R&B track, but with the help of garage legend Matt "Jam" Lamont, a remix was created that became a sensation in the underground garage scene and a major radio success. Mis-Teeq had created a name for themselves by combining R&B, garage, and rap in a unique way. Mis-Teeq dubbed their look "U.K. Urban." Alesha and Sabrina had established a pair after meeting at a dancing school in South West London. Su-Elise was auditioning for another group when they met her. They were signed by the same production firm and decided to form a group after spending time together, with the inclusion of a fourth member, Zena, who was afterward thrown out of the lineup for the purpose of "harmony and balance." Following Zena quit after the re-release of "Why?" the three-piece became recognized as the greatest Garage/RnB girl group in the United Kingdom. Despite its debut on a number of dance compilations and an early lack of media backing, ‘Why?' became a success. They followed up "Why" with international successes "All I Want" and "One Night Stand," both of which charted in the Top 10 in the United Kingdom and a few other European nations. ‘All I Want,' ‘One Night Stand,' ‘B With Me,' ‘Roll On / This Is How We Do It' (Album: Lickin' On Both Sides), and ‘Scandalous, Can't Get It Back, and Style' (Album: Eye Candy) all charted in the top ten in the United Kingdom. Their final song, 'Style,' came in at number 13, narrowly missing the top ten. After conquering the rest of the world, Su-Elise, Alesha, and Sabrina began touring the United States in 2004. The girls have built up popularity after performing on well-known shows including Jimmy Kimmel, Pepsi Smash, and Carson Daly. Unfortunately, the dissolution of their record company Telstar in January 2005 left Mis-Teeq unclear of where they should go or what they should do next. With statements like "Mis-Teeq were on the point of signing a major contract in America, but they couldn't stomach relocating there," press releases revealed the group's breakup. It's a pity, but that's exactly what they intended. They'd seen the inroads and decided to call it a day peacefully.' Alesha revealed her intention to pursue a solo career two weeks later and was quickly signed to Polydor Records and managed by Derek McKillop. Alesha's debut single, "Lipstick," was released in August 2006 and reached number 14 on the UK Top 40 Chart. Her second single, "Knockdown," came in at number 45 in the UK Top 40 list. Both singles had all they needed to be successful, but Polydor was not on Alesha's side and stymied her growth. Alesha made the prudent decision to quit the company without releasing her maiden self-penned album, "Fired Up," in October of 2006. In the same month, Alesha divorced her unfaithful husband Harvey. Fast forward to October 2007, and Alesha is back on top of her game following a tumultuous year marked by media intrusion into her personal life. Alesha opted to compete on BBC1's hit show "Strictly Come Dancing," where she won millions of hearts with her dancing. Alesha wins the competition and launches her return to the top on December 22nd, 2007. Alesha began 2008 as the face of the new Ford Focus vehicle campaign, which used the song "For You, I Will" from her "Fired Up" album. Alesha re-released her 2006 album "Fired Up" in Japan in early 2008, and she re-released hit "Lipstick" climbed to number one on the Japanese charts. It wasn't until November 2008 that Alesha attempted to reclaim the UK charts, this time with her single "The Boy Does Nothing." The song charted at number 5 and was shortly followed by the success of ‘Breathe Slow,' which reached number 3 in 2009. Following the release of these two singles, Alesha announced two May 2009 tour dates in Wolverhampton and Norwich, which she planned to use as a springboard for a full tour later that year. Fans and the press praised both shows, so Alesha got to work on her following songs while the tour was still in the works. Following singles 'Let's Get Excited' and 'To Love Again' both missed the top ten, debuting at 13 and 14 respectively. Alesha's album "The Alesha Show" only just missed out on a Top 10 spot, peaking at number 11, but it went platinum and has already sold over 300,000 copies in the United Kingdom. Alesha finished 2009 with a 17-city, sell-out tour of the United Kingdom with her live band. Alesha climbed Mount Kilimanjaro with Gary Barlow, Fearne Cotton, Ben Shepherd, Cheryl Cole, Kimberley Walsh, Denise Van Outen, Chris Moyles, and Ronan Keating in 2009. Music wasn't Alesha's only success in 2009; she also climbed Mount Kilimanjaro with Gary Barlow, Fearne Cotton, Ben Shepherd, Cheryl Cole, Kimberley Walsh, Denise Van Outen, Chris Moyles, and Ronan They raised more than 3 million pounds for Comic Relief as a group. Alesha hosted and produced two of her own BBC3 documentaries, named "Look But Don't Touch" and "Who's Your Daddy?" in 2009, both of which look at social concerns in today's culture. Alesha Dixon was named as Arlene Phillips' replacement on the Strictly Come Dancing judging panel in the summer of 2009. Alesha faced a barrage of criticism and public outrage after the BBC was accused of "ageism" for substituting a 60-year-old professional for Alesha, who had only won the competition as a celebrity competitor two years before. Alesha has plans to record her third album (her second in the UK) in 2010 and hopes to expand her tour to Europe, break into the American charts, make more documentaries, and even host her own talk show.
