Alec Mapa received his big break in the Broadway production of M. Butterfly, where he was cast to understudy and eventually replace B. D. Wong. Mapa went on to play the part in the national tour. In 1992, Mapa made her Broadway comeback in an adaptation of Georges Feydeau and Maurice Desvallières' L'Hôtel du libre échange, renamed A Little Hotel on the Side. I Remember Mapa, a one-man show about his experiences growing up homosexual in San Francisco, was written and performed by him. Wisecrack, a Logo original stand-up comedy series, featured Mapa as a featured performer. On the TV show Desperate Housewives, she played Vern, Gabrielle's personal shopper, in 2006. Suzuki St. Pierre, the flamboyant host of a fictitious gossip and news program, was a recurrent character in the 2006-2010 sitcom Ugly Betty. On the animated comedy Rick & Steve: The Happiest Homosexual Couple in the World, he voiced Rick's flamboyantly gay uncle Bakla from 2007 to 2009. In 2008, Mapa and Calpernia Addams co-hosted the Logo network reality dating game program Transamerican Love Story. Alec Mapa: Baby Daddy, a one-man performance he presented in 2013, was turned into a concert film and aired on Showtime in 2015.
