About Al Bumbry

Al Bumbry Biography

Al Bumbry is widely considered as the quickest player in Oriole history, which I'm not sure if it's accurate or not, and that's not really the point. With 252 stolen bases when he retired, he was Baltimore's all-time leader. (With 351, Sisler holds the franchise record.) Bumbry was born in Fredericksburg, Virginia, on April 21, 1947, and attended Virginia State University. In 1968, he was conscripted in the 11th round and participated in the Vietnam War, earning a Bronze Star. He debuted at the age of 25 in 1972, appearing in nine games, and earned the American League Rookie of the Year title in 1973, hitting.337/.398/.500 in 356 at-bats with 15 doubles, 11 triples, seven homers, 34 RBI, 23 steals, and 73 runs scored. Bumbry was dreadful in 94 games in 1974, and he participated in 114 games in 1975, where he got back into shape a little bit. He was never as good as he was as a rookie, though. However, he had some really good years, like 1977 (.317/.371/.411), and his finest year came at the age of 33 in 1980, when he hit.318/.392/.433 with 29 doubles, nine triples, nine homers, 53 RBI, 44 steals, 75 walks, 205 hits, and 118 runs scored. It was also his first and only All-Star Game participation. Bumbry had a 104 park-adjusted OPS+ during his career, a.281/.343/.378 line, stole several bases, developed into a strong defensive center fielder over time, and was a member of championship teams in 1979 and 1983. He joined with the Padres in 1985 and appeared in 68 games as a reserve outfielder (95 at-bats). Bumbry retired after that one season out west. Earl Weaver said it best about Bumbry: "Raleighs have gone from six fifty to nine dollars a carton, but there's a three-quarter penny coupon on the back." You can acquire everything from them, even blenders. I saved up enough money one day and purchased Al Bumbry. Bumbry also played for the Winter Haven Super Sox in the short-lived Senior Professional Baseball Association in 1989, hitting.340 in 51 games. Fergie Jenkins, Mike Cuellar, Cecil Cooper, Butch Hobson, and, of course, the famous Pete LaCock were all on that squad (which lasted only one season, and the league didn't exist much longer).
