He was born into a working-class family and received a scholarship at Cambridge University to study theoretical physics in the late 1960s. He taught high school for a year after graduating from Cambridge before heading to Thailand to train as a monk with the Venerable Ajahn Chah Bodhinyana Mahathera. He was requested to compile an English-language handbook to the Buddhist monastic rule – the Vinaya – while still a junior monk, which eventually formed the basis for monastic discipline in many Theravadan monasteries in Western nations.
