Adam Shepard Biography

Adam Shepard received a basketball scholarship to Merrimack College in North Andover, Massachusetts, and graduated with a degree in Business Management and Spanish. During his years as a Resident Advisor as an upperclassman, he developed a keen interest in our country's social concerns. With practically little in his bank account after graduation, Shepard left his home state for Charleston, SC, to begin the experience he documented in Scratch Beginnings. Scratch Beginnings tells the tale of Adams' own quest to learn more about the current status of the American Dream. Adam Shepard went off for a randomly picked city with only a sleeping bag, the clothing on his back, and $25 cash, and was prohibited from using past contacts or his education. His objective was to acquire$2,500, a car, and a furnished apartment after one year. His goal was to discover if having a strong work ethic and using solid personal money management strategies paid off in any way. Scratch Beginnings chronicles Adams' 70 days in a homeless shelter in Charleston, South Carolina; his breaking his toe, getting sick, and being beaten up by his roommate; his triumphs and woes working as a mover with Derrick Hale, the story's eventual hero; and, most importantly, the ordinary, everyday, average people he meets along the way, many of whom left an indelible impression on his life. Scratch Beginnings was first self-published and marketed by Adam, who appeared on the Today Show, CNN, Fox News, and NPR before selling to HarperCollins and appearing on the Dave Ramsey Show and 20/20. He's also given 137 radio appearances and had articles published in the Christian Science Monitor, the New York Post, The Atlantic, and 55 local newspapers throughout the country. Adams' youthfulness and vigor have made him a popular speaker at high schools and universities around the country. His talk may cover the same ground as many other speakers' disciplines, attitude, coping with hardship, failure, and leadership—but he does so in a way that no one else can. Adam resides in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he continues to write, talk, and dominate the elderly guys in Raleigh's adult basketball leagues while his knees still allow him to do so.
