A. O. Scott Biography

A.O. Scott wanted to be a rock critic since he was a kid. He worked as a book critic after dropping out of graduate school, and when The New York Times recruited him in 2000, he became a film critic by mistake. In 2004, the publication doubled down on that strange choice by naming him chief film critic, a role he now shares with Manohla Dargis. Mr. Scott has continued to dabble in literary criticism for The Book Review (and other publications on occasion) and writes for The Times Magazine whenever he gets the opportunity. He also makes frequent radio and television appearances, particularly around Oscar season. After a long sabbatical, he returned to academia in 2013 and is now a distinguished professor of cinema criticism at Wesleyan University. He gives a lot of talks on movies, especially about the significance of criticism, which he discusses in his book "Better Living Through Criticism," which is published by Penguin Books. Mr. Scott spends his time in Brooklyn and on a tiny island off the coast of Maine, cooking and enjoying the company of his wife, their two largely grown children, and their dog when he is not watching movies or listening to music (and still dreams of rock critic fame).
