Keeping Calm Under the Most Strenuous of Circumstances at Sea
Houston’s port is the nation’s leading hub for waterborne tonnage, energy cargo, and steel, while also being home to the fifth-largest container port in the U.S. Each fall, Port Houston hosts the Houston International Maritime Conference (HIMC25), bringing together global maritime and energy leaders to address crucial topics like market trends, supply chain resilience, and workforce development.
This year, they have chosen retired merchant mariner and author Captain Richard Phillips to be the event’s keynote speaker. The event will take place from November 2-5 at the Hilton Americas in downtown Houston.
Phillips is best known for his role as captain of the MV Maersk Alabama during its 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates. A graduate of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Phillips became a national figure when he was taken hostage on a lifeboat for five days by Somali pirates. He was rescued by U.S. Navy SEALs, who executed the three offenders. Phillips detailed his ordeal in his 2010 memoir, “A Captain’s Duty”, which inspired the 2013 film "Captain Phillips", starring Tom Hanks.
