About Zonnie Gorman

Zonnie Gorman Biography

Zonnie Gorman is a well-known historian of the Navajo Code Talkers of World War II who is also an enthusiastic instructor. She has provided advice to a lot of films, museum exhibits, and writers. At the moment, Gorman oversees projects for the nonprofit Circle of Light Navajo Educational Project, which was established in May 2001 and is based in Gallup, New Mexico. In addition to fostering cultural pride and self-worth, CLNEP provides young people with a range of Navajo role models and teaches them—along with non-Navajos—about the rich history, culture, language, and contributions of the Navajo people. She is the descendant of the late Dr. Carl Gorman, a teacher, artist, and one of the "first twenty-nine" Navajo Code Talkers who created the first Navajo code. She is also the youngest sibling of the late R.C. Gorman, a legendary and well-known Navajo artist. In 1989, Gorman set out on a quest to learn more about the Code Talker side of her father. Her path has taken her through fifteen years of in-depth study and interviews because she loves history. Gorman is a heartwarming tale of two young boys looking for adventure and escape. The Code Talker tale is the height of absurdity and a triumph for Native Americans. Gorman has given several lectures around the country, including at a number of schools and institutions, the N.A.S.A. Headquarters in Washington, DC, and the Museum of the American Indian in New York. She has appeared in and served as a consultant for a number of documentaries, including the films Windtalkers, True Whispers, and the History Channel documentary Navajo Code Talkers. The Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial Governor's Board is presided over by Gorman. The Ceremonial is a yearly celebration of Native American song, dance, art, and culture that takes place in New Mexico. She serves as the president of the Extol Charitable Foundation, a group that promotes fetal alcohol syndrome prevention awareness. She serves as the vice chair of the Gallup Economic Development and Tourism Commission and on the board of Think First Navajo, a regional affiliate of the national initiative to reduce spinal and traumatic injuries called Think First. Additionally, she serves on the advisory board of College Horizons, a program that helps Native American kids get ready for college and prepare for graduate and undergraduate studies.
