About Zak Ebrahim

Zak Ebrahim Biography

The son of an Egyptian industrial engineer and an American teacher, Zak Ebrahim was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on March 24, 1983. When Ebrahim was seven years old, on November 5, 1990, his father killed Rabbi Meir Kahane, the head of the Jewish Defense League. The man Ebrahim looked up to and referred to him as "Amu" (Arabic for uncle) was found guilty in 1994 of blowing up a vehicle loaded with 1,500 pounds of explosives in the underground parking lot of the North tower of the World Trade Center. The conspiracy, which included attempting to attack 12 New York City monuments such as tunnels, synagogues, and the UN headquarters, ultimately led to the conviction of Ebrahim's father. Nosair's legal defense during his trial was partially funded by Osama Bin Laden, and in one of his iconic video messages, Bin Laden pleaded with people to "Remember El-Sayyid Nosair." Ebrahim had grown up in a terrorist-filled environment. His family relocated more than twenty times after his father was sent to prison, protecting his identity from those who knew about his father while he continued to be tormented by and targeted for his father's misdeeds. Although his politicized father served as a role model for his extreme ideals, the awkward, introverted youngster never connected with them. As he got older, Ebrahim was better able to comprehend the horrible nature of his father's deeds. He became increasingly determined to devote his life to advancing peace as he gained more knowledge. He now campaigns for peace and nonviolence and speaks out against terrorism. He took part in the New York City talent hunt for TED in 2013 and was chosen to present in the main event, TED2014, in Vancouver, British Columbia. More than two million people have seen his TED presentation, which was made public on September 9, 2014, in connection with the release of his TED Book, "The Terrorist's Son: A Story of Choice." In the book, as in his lectures, Ebrahim describes his extraordinary struggle to escape his father's awful legacy. He comes to the conclusion that the only way to overcome the difficulties of his history is to educate others on how nonviolence heals rather than causes more violence. No matter how long-standing, those cycles of violence don't have to last indefinitely. From Pittsburgh to Memphis, from a mosque in Jersey City to the Busch Gardens theme park in Tampa, Ebrahim's journey spans the eastern United States. It is the tale of a youngster raised with dogma and hatred who was expected to follow in his father's footsteps and the man who took a different road.
