She had many brief television appearances in soap opera-style dramas on ABC, MTV, and off-Broadway. In order to appear in the Korean TV drama "A Gorgeous Vacation," she was persuaded to go back to her native country in 1996 by a call from a Korean TV show that was filmed in Manhattan.

Then, in "Foreboding" and the miniseries "Wedding Dress," she played two more parts. Then, in 1997, a script for her first movie, "Shiri," was provided to her (1999). The first big-budget movie made in Korea, "Shiri," surpassed all previous records for box office revenue in 1999. Kim consequently became well-known throughout Korea.
