About Winston Scott

Winston Scott Biography

The ascent of NASA astronaut Winston Scott to the skies is proof of the strength of tenacity and foresight. Scott was up in Miami and received a mainly segregated education with limited access to resources, but his perseverance and the commitment of his professors led him to an impressive career. Scott, who just resigned from NASA, is now considered as a case study in leadership and skilled communication. These traits were most prominently displayed during the well-reported hand capture of the Spartan satellite during the 1997 Columbia mission. Reflections From Earth Orbit, Scott's most recent book, is not your average guide on using the restroom in space. Instead, Scott's views on his two space flights as a NASA astronaut aboard the space shuttles Endeavor and Columbia serve as the backdrop for this book about life. Reflections is Scott's method of sharing some of the life lessons that inspired him to overcome his challenges and join the elite group of people who have traveled into space. As he leads audiences on a voyage to locations few people will ever visit, Scott dazzles audiences with magnificent real videos from space while he lectures. In order to provide a distinctive viewpoint on international team development and the essence of leadership, he also draws on his experience working with NASA. He has led teams of astronauts and technicians in some of the most demanding environments known to man, leading them on multiple spacewalks, satellite retrievals, and ground-breaking experiments for the International Space Station. The information and understanding Scott acquired through his job serve as a priceless resource for any business or person operating under pressure. Winston Scott joined the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in 1992 and has since enjoyed a successful career as an astronaut. On the STS-72 Endeavour mission in 1996 and the STS-87 Columbia mission in 1997, he worked as a mission specialist. The crew of the nine-day historic Endeavour voyage deployed and retrieved the OAST-Flyer satellite, retrieved the Space Flyer Unit satellite, and completed two spacewalks to test and showcase construction methods for the International Space Station. More than 214 hours in space were logged by Scott during this ground-breaking trip. He then flew the STS-87 Columbia mission in 1997, which included the challenging hand capture of a Spartan satellite as well as the testing of gear and techniques for upcoming space station assembly. Scott had a stellar military career before entering NASA, rising to the rank of Captain. He held the positions of Aerospace Engineering Duty Officer, Production Test Pilot, and Director of the Product Support (Engineering) Department. Scott logged more than 5,000 hours of flying experience in more than 20 different military and private aircraft throughout the course of his career as a Naval Aviator, in addition to more than 200 shipboard landings. Additionally, he taught electrical engineering as an adjunct professor at Florida AM University and Florida Community College in Jacksonville. Scott earned a B.A. in music from Florida State University after graduating from Coral Gables High School. Later, he graduated from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School with an M.S. in aeronautical engineering. He presently serves as vice president and deputy general manager of Jacobs Engineering's Engineering and Science Contract Group (ESCG), one of the biggest engineering contractors in the world. Scott is a member of a number of organizations, including the National Naval Officers Association, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and the Alpha Phi Alpha and Phi Mu Alpha fraternities. Together with his wife Marilyn, he resides in Florida.
