William Julius Wilson Biography

At Harvard University, William Julius Wilson holds the Lewis P. and Linda L. Geyser University Professorship. He holds the highest professional designation available to a Harvard faculty member—one of just 19 University Professors. Wilson taught sociology at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst after earning his Ph.D. from Washington State University in 1966, and then he joined the University of Chicago faculty in 1972. He was named the Lucy Flower University Professor and the Center for the Study of Urban Inequality's director at the University of Chicago in 1990. He started working there as a professor in July 1996. Wilson, a former president of the American Sociological Association, has received 42 honorary degrees, including honorary doctorates from Princeton, Columbia, the University of Pennsylvania, Northwestern, Johns Hopkins, Dartmouth, and the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. Wilson also served as the organization's vice president from 2004 to 2007. Wilson served as a MacArthur Prize Fellow from 1987 to 1992 and has been elected to the National Academies of Sciences, Education, Medicine, and Arts as well as the American Philosophical Society and the British Academy. He was chosen by Time magazine as one of the 25 Most Influential People in America in June 1996. He received the American scientific community's highest accolade, the National Medal of Science, in 1998. In 2003, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences gave him the Talcott Parsons Prize in the Social Sciences. In addition to serving as the Chair of the Board of The Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences and of the Russell Sage Foundation, Professor Wilson is a member of several national boards and committees.
