About Wayne Angell

Wayne Angell Biography

Angell Economics is a brand-new venture that Wayne Angell started. The core of a firm that also involves giving customers advice and taking positions in interest rate, bond, stock, and currency futures has to do with economic and monetary policy forecasting. Dr. Angell served on the Federal Reserve System's board of governors from February 7, 1986, until February 9, 1994. He presided over both the G-10 committee on Payment and Settlement Systems in Basel, Switzerland and the board's committee on Federal Reserve Bank Activities. Wayne Angell was given the opportunity to join Bear Stearns in April 1994 as their chief economist, with overall responsibility for the economics research department, two months after his stint as a member of the board of governors came to an end. He regularly interacted with institutional investors, even though his main objective was to offer insight into monetary policy and its implications on the US and worldwide economies. Along with counseling patients from all over the world, Dr. Angell regularly offered suggestions and guidance to the Bank of Japan, the Peoples' Bank of China, the Monetary Authorities of Singapore, Hong Kong, Korea, and the Philippines. In Kansas, Mr. Angell was born on June 28, 1930. 1952 saw the completion of his BA at Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kansas, and 1953 saw the completion of his MA at the University of Kansas. He started a two-year stint as a full-time economics educator at the University of Kansas after finishing the requirements for a Ph.D. To satisfy the last prerequisite for a Ph.D. in economics, he finished his dissertation, "The History of Commercial Banking in Kansas, 1854-1954," in 1957. As an assistant professor of economics at Ottawa University, Dr. Angell started his long career there in 1956. In 1959, he received a promotion to full professor. He held the positions of the department chair, division chair, and college dean from 1969 to 1972. He returned to classroom teaching from 1975 to 1985 following a three-month sabbatical journey that took him to Japan, India, Nepal, Thailand, the Philippines, Hong Kong, and all of the above. By serving two terms as a director of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City and by making two additional research trips around the world to South East Asia, with a concentration on India, China, and Malaysia, he continued to widen his interest in economics. As a bank officer and director and as consultant to banks and thrifts in Missouri, Kansas, and Colorado, he also acquired fresh direct business expertise. Mr. Angell focused his emphasis throughout this time on the growingly difficult challenge of controlling interest rates and prepayment risk. He was a committed Republican who held a variety of positions within the Kansas Republican Party. Mr. Angell and his brother Charlie Angell were partners in an agricultural enterprise from 1955 through 1985. From 1100 acres in 1951 to 3300 acres in the 1970s, their farm's land area increased. They were utilizing a high-performance single-engine airplane to cover all the bases, which let them handle their growing banking and legislative interests more effectively. In 1951, Wayne Angell obtained his private pilot's certificate. Distinguished Kansas of the Year of the Native Sons and Daughters in 1987, Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Kansas in 1953, Who's Who in America, Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Ottawa University in 1992, and Distinguished Service Award from the Alumni Association of Ottawa University in 1980 are just a few of the honors and awards that Dr. Angell has received. Arlington, Virginia, is home to Wayne and Betty Angell. Four of their children and nine of their grandchildren. He continues to be quite physically active, participating in tennis, skiing, bicycling, walking, and ascending 14,000-foot mountains in Colorado.
