Tenev, the son of two World Bank employees, grew up favoring massive organizations above entrepreneurship. Tenev, who was born in Bulgaria and raised in Washington, D.C., dropped out of UCLA's math Ph.D. program in 2011 to work on high-tech trading software for hedge funds and banks with college pal Baiju Bhatt.
They soon shifted their attention to retail customers, with the goal of undercutting major retail brokers like E-Trade and Fidelity through technology, design, and rock-bottom price. Robinhood is a commission-free stock trading program that is available to anybody with a smartphone.
