The editor-in-chief of ESSENCE magazine is Vanessa K. DeLuca. She manages the editorial direction of the brand and the magazine and website's content in this capacity. De Luca started off at ESSENCE more than ten years ago as the magazine's Beauty and Fashion Features Editor, overseeing all of the fashion and beauty sections. She was appointed Lifestyle Director in 2003, in charge of topics including parenthood, technology, cuisine, and the house. She also contributed to the editorial features team, producing and editing a number of noteworthy articles on issues including teen dating violence and childhood obesity. She was appointed executive editor in 2005, leading the editorial staff to carry out the brand's creative vision as well as managing the staffing, systems, operations, and operational budget for the magazine. She worked in several editorial roles at Life and Glamour before joining ESSENCE. De Luca is a bestselling author of Tyra Banks's Beauty Inside & Out and an award-winning journalist. She has been a featured guest on several national television networks, including NBC's TODAY Show, MSNBC's Morning Joe with Melissa Harris Perry, CNN, HLN, and HuffPost Live. Harvard University awarded De Luca a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors in English and American Literature, and Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism awarded her a Master of Science with a focus on magazines.
