Tom Wheeler Biography

2013 saw Tom Wheeler take over as the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) 31st chairman. President Barack Obama nominated Chairman Wheeler, and the US Senate overwhelmingly approved his appointment. Chairman Wheeler has been working with new telecommunications networks and services for more than three decades, witnessing the telecommunications revolution as a policy expert, supporter, and businessman. He established many businesses that provided cutting-edge cable, wireless, and video communications services. President Obama jokingly referred to him as "The Bo Jackson of Telecom" since he is the only individual to be chosen for both the Cable Television Hall of Fame and The Wireless Hall of Fame. Chairman Wheeler formerly held the position of Managing Director at Core Capital Partners, a venture capital company that makes investments in early-stage Internet Protocol (IP)-based businesses. He co-founded SmartBrief, the biggest electronic information service on the internet for vertical markets, while also holding the positions of president and CEO of Shiloh Group, LLC, a strategy development and private investment firm focusing on telecommunications services. Chairman Wheeler worked for the National Cable Television Association (NCTA) from 1976 to 1984, serving as president and a chief executive officer from 1979 to 1984. Following NCTA, Chairman Wheeler served as CEO of a number of high-tech firms, including the first provider of the high-speed data distribution to personal computers and the first satellite service for digital television. Chairman Wheeler led the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association as president and CEO from 1992 until 2004. (CTIA). Both "Take Command: Leadership Lessons of the Civil War" and "Mr. Lincoln's T-Mails: The Untold Story of How Abraham Lincoln Used the Telegraph to Win the Civil War" were written by Chairman Wheeler and published by Doubleday in 2000. (HarperCollins, 2006). In addition to other prestigious journals, his commentary on current events has appeared in the Washington Post, USA Today, Los Angeles Times, and Newsday. Chairman Wheeler was chosen by Presidents Clinton and Bush to serve as a Trustee of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, a position he held for 12 years. In addition, he served as the former Chairman and President of the Foundation for the National Archives, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to use its records to convey the story of the United States, as well as on the board of the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS). Chairman Wheeler received The Ohio State University's Alumni Medal and is a proud alumnus of the institution. He is a Washington, D.C., resident.
