About Tina Andrews

Tina Andrews Biography

Award-winning playwright, screenwriter, producer, director, and multi-media visual artist Tina Andrews has worked in these fields. She is also one of the busiest script doctors in Hollywood. Her nonfiction work, Sally Hemings An American Scandal: The Struggle To Tell The Controversial True Story, was honored with the Memphis Black Writers Conference Literary Award of Excellence and the NAACP Image Award for "Outstanding Achievement in Literary Nonfiction." The award-winning CBS miniseries Sally Hemings: An American Scandal, which she created and executive produced, served as the basis for the book. Being the most popular and best-rated miniseries of the season, it earned Miss Andrews both the NAACP Image Award for "Outstanding TV Movie, Miniseries, or Special" and the Writers Guild of America Award for "Outstanding Longform Television." Andrews directed her to play "The Mistress of Monticello" at the Chicago Dramatists Workshop, and CBS purchased the miniseries based on it. Andrews received a proclamation from the City Council of New York as well as the MIB/Prism Filmmaker Image Award in recognition of her contributions to cinema and television. In addition, Miss Andrews authored and served as executive producer of the CBS miniseries Jackie Bouvier Kennedy Onassis. She also penned the Halle Berry-starring Warner Bros. movie Why Do Fools Fall In Love. Andrews has co-written the music and lyrics as well as the book for the forthcoming Broadway musical that is based on her screenplay for the movie. She also contributed an article to the book The First Time I Got Paid For It: Writers Tales From The Hollywood Trenches and wrote, produced, and directed the wildly successful Showtime animated series Sistas 'n the City (Public Affairs). Miss Andrews has written articles that have appeared in publications including Written By, Creative Screenwriting, and the Los Angeles Times. Andrews, who majored in theatre at New York University, has appeared as an actress in more than 100 films and television productions, including Conrack with Jon Voight, Carny with Jodie Foster, and her landmark role as Valerie Grant on Days of Our Lives, which featured the first interracial romance on daytime television. However, it was her portrayal of "Aurelia," Kunta Kinte's girlfriend in the critically acclaimed miniseries Roots, which sparked an extraordinary bond with Alex Haley, her literary master. Together, they worked on Alex Haley's Great Men of African Descent, a PBS miniseries. Colombia Pictures ended up buying Andrews' first script as a result. The Oprah Show, CBS This Morning, Mysteries and Scandals on E! Entertainment, PBS Frontline, and BET Now with Ed Gordon have all had Tina Andrews as a guest. She has given writing lectures at several universities, including Indiana University, New York University, University of Southern California, Los Angeles City College, Cal-State Northridge, UCLA, Colombia College, and the University of North Carolina. She is a member of the boards of the Writers Guild Foundation, Indiana University Black Film Archives, and the Hollywood Black Film Festival. The prestigious Guild Hall theatre in East Hampton invited Miss Andrews to direct a staged reading of Bruce Norris' Pulitzer Prize-winning drama "Clybourne Park" in February 2013. Her most recent play, "The Mistress of Monticello," which Andrews also directed and was based on her critically acclaimed CBS miniseries, just had a successful performance at the Southampton Cultural Center. It is now being prepared for a regional and West End run. She is now directing a play at Santa Monica's renowned Highways Performance Space that she adapted from her latest historical fiction book, Charlotte Sophia: Myth, Madness, and the Moor, which is based on Britain's Queen Charlotte Sophia, who was of African origin. She just accepted the position of playwright-in-residence at the Southampton Cultural Center's Center Stage Theater, where her play, now titled "Buckingham," will have its East Coast debut. The show debuts on May 3, 2013, for a three-week engagement, followed by a Broadway commercial run and a regional run at the Pasadena Playhouse. The production is under Miss Andrews' direction. Additionally, Highways Performance Space will be hosting another performance of her one-woman show "Life In The Abstract" (which showcases 20 of her abstract paintings).
