Around two million women and children, many of whom are under 10 years old, are purchased and sold every year. Sunitha Krishnan co-founded Prajwala, or "everlasting flame," a nonprofit in Hyderabad that rescues women from brothels and instructs their children to prevent second-generation prostitution, motivated by the secrecy surrounding the sex-trafficking problem.
For 5,000 students, Prajwala operates 17 schools around Hyderabad. It has also freed more than 2,500 prostitutes, including 1,500 that Krishnan personally freed. Prajwala assists young victims in being ready for a self-sufficient future at its Asha Niketan institution. Krishnan organized the government, businesses, and non-governmental organizations to launch India's anti-trafficking drive.
