Stephen Schwarzman Biography

Stephen A. Schwarzman is the Chairman, CEO, and Co-Founder of Blackstone, as well as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Blackstone Group Management L.L.C., its general partner. Since the firm's inception in 1985, he has been involved in all stages of its development. Mr. Schwarzman began his career with Lehman Brothers, where he rose to the position of Managing Director at the age of 31 in 1978. From 1977 to 1984, he was primarily involved in the firm's mergers and acquisitions business, and he served as Chairman of the firm's Mergers & Acquisitions Committee in 1983 and 1984. Mr. Schwarzman is the Chairman of The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts' Board of Directors. He belongs to the Council on Foreign Relations as well as the Business Council. He now serves on the boards of The New York Public Library, The New York City Ballet, The Asia Society, and The Film Society of Lincoln Center. He is also a member of the JP Morgan Chase National Advisory Board, the New York City Partnership Board of Directors, and the Advisory Board of Tsinghua University's School of Economics and Management in Beijing. Mr. Schwarzman also serves on the board of The Frick Collection in New York City. Mr. Schwarzman graduated from Yale University with a BA and from Harvard Business School with an MBA. He has been an adjunct professor at Yale School of Management and a member of Harvard Business School's Visiting Committee.
