Stephen Roach Biography

Stephen S. Roach is a senior fellow at Yale University's Jackson Institute for Global Affairs and a member of the Yale School of Management faculty. He formerly served as Morgan Stanley Asia's Non-Executive Chairman (a position he held after serving as managing director and chief economist of Morgan Stanley). Mr. Roach was Vice President for Economic Analysis at the Morgan Guaranty Trust Company in New York before joining Morgan Stanley in 1982. From 1972 to 1979, he worked on the research staff of the Federal Reserve Board in Washington, D.C. He had previously worked as a research fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. Mr. Roach's research spans a wide variety of themes, with a particular emphasis on globalization, China's rise, productivity, and the macroeconomic benefits of information technology. His work has appeared in academic publications, books, legislative testimony, and the Financial Times, New York Times, Washington Post, and Wall Street Journal op-ed pages. He graduated from New York University with a Ph.D. in economics and the University of Wisconsin with a bachelor's degree in economics.
