About Stephen L. Weiss

Stephen L. Weiss Biography

Stephen L. Weiss has spent the last 25 years on Wall Street in senior roles with the most famous asset management and investment banking organizations. Weiss began his Wall Street career after two years as a tax attorney, first at Oppenheimer Co. and then at Salomon Brothers during the time it was controlled by Warren Buffett, developing and communicating investment ideas to the industry's most respected investment funds, including SAC Capital (Steve Cohen), Tiger Management (Julian Robertson), Soros Funds, Kingdon Capital, and Omega Advisors (Lee Cooperman). He was asked to co-manage Salomon Brothers' 500-person Global Equity Research Department after a successful career as an institutional salesperson, where he developed the Street's first truly global product, integrating the firm's research efforts from Europe, Asia, Latin America, and the United States. In addition to representing the Equity Division on the Capital Commitment Committee, he chaired the Stock Selection Committee. Weiss went on to co-manage SAC Capital before joining Lehman Brothers, where he effectively created the Street's top institutional equities sales team while sitting on the Global Sales, Capital Commitment, Investment Policy, and US Executive Committees. He was instrumental in the research division's ascension to first place in the annual Institutional Investor survey, the gold standard of Wall Street research. Weiss was scheduled to fly on Flight 93 on September 11, 2001, but canceled at the last minute. He was, however, at Ground Zero at his World Financial Center office when the aircraft hit the WTC. This was a life-changing incident for Weiss, as it was for so many others, and when Lehman put this awful and devastating event behind them, he chose to spend more time with his family and begin his second career as an author. Weiss returned to investment management in 2004, co-founding a long/short equities hedge fund, after missing the day-to-day action of the markets. After three years with a favorable return profile, he joined a boutique investment bank as the Managing Partner of the Equity Division, where he implemented significant changes that increased the firm's market share from 25th to 12th, as measured by trading volume, while also increasing profitability. Weiss has written two highly regarded investing books. "The Billion Dollar Mistake: Learning the Art of Investing from the Mistakes of Legendary Investors" has been translated into Korean, Japanese, and two Chinese dialects in addition to English. In 2010, Forbes rated it one of the top five new investment books. "The Big Win: Learning from the Legends to Become a More Successful Investor," his second book, was released in May 2012. He has also authored a novel, "UNHEDGED A Killing in the Market," a financial thriller. In addition to being a professional investor, Stephen Weiss has an exclusive broadcast deal with CNBC as a market pundit, appearing on "Fast Money" and "Fast Money Halftime Report," as well as other CNBC programmes such as "The Kudlow Report" and "Power Lunch." Weiss also blogs about his opinions on investing on a regular basis and makes presentations to investment clubs and business organizations about developing a culture of success. He is also asked to advise Wall Street corporations on their business strategies. He has several ties with some of the industry's most successful investors and asset managers.
