Stephen Hess is a senior fellow emeritus in Governance Studies at The Brookings Institution and one of the finest specialists on media and government in the United States. He began his career at Brookings in 1972 and was a distinguished research professor of media and public affairs at George Washington University from 2004 to 2009. Served on the White House staff throughout the Eisenhower and Nixon administrations, as well as as an advisor to Presidents Ford and Carter. Hess has served as a Fellow in the Faculty of Government at Harvard University (1979-82), as well as the United States Representative to the United Nations General Assembly (1976) and the UNESCO General Conference (1982). (1974). From 1969 to 1971, he was the National Chairman of the White House Conference on Children and Youth, and in 1969, he was the Deputy Assistant to the President for Urban Affairs. He has taken part in several US cultural missions across the world and has served as a significant consultant and adviser for the Russell Sage Foundation, the German Marshall Fund, the Ford Foundation, and the US Government. He has given nearly fifty college and university lectures. Hess has won several important awards, including inclusion in "Who Who in America," "Contemporary Authors," and "Who Who in American Politics." In 1974, he was named one of Time magazine's 200 Young American Leaders, and on December 14, 1970, he was named the New York Times Man in the News. Hess is a member of the National Academy of Public Administration and the Shorenstein Center for Press, Politics, and Public Policy at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government. In 2010, a Chinese edition of "International News Foreign Correspondents" was launched. A Workbook for the Next President." Hess's other publications include "Through Their Eyes: Foreign Correspondents in the United States," released in 2005; "The Media in the War on Terrorism," co-authored with Marvin Kalb (2003); and "Organizing the Presidency," published in 2008. (3rd edition, 2002). His book, "The Little Book of Campaign Etiquette," earned the Arthur Rowse Award for Press Criticism from the National Press Club in 2000. In 1996, he published "International News Foreign Correspondents," "News Newsmaking," and "Presidents the President," a trilogy of publications on the presidency, the press, and foreign news coverage. "The Presidential Campaign," "The Ultimate Insiders: U.S. Senators in the National Media," winner of the American Library Association's Outstanding Academic Book award; "The Washington Reporters," winner of the Lowell Mellett Award for Improving Journalism through Critical Evaluation; and "Nixon: a Political Portrait," with Earl Mazo, which now has 30 foreign editions. He released the book in the autumn of 2012 "What Happened to the Washington Reporters from 1978 to 2012. "America's Political Dynasties: From Adam to Clinton," Hess' most recent book, "provides an intriguing look at the families that have led America.
