Stan Thekaekara Biography

Stan Thekaekara became active in social action after participating in a nationwide student movement in India. He later spent several years in a rural community in Bihar. He then established a number of grassroots non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in various districts of India. He and his wife Mari co-founded ACCORD in 1986 and have spent the past 20 years mobilizing the adivasis of Tamil Nadu's Nilgiri Hills to fight for their social, political, and human rights. Adivasis are an indigenous people who live outside of the Hindu caste system and account for around 6% of the Indian population. He is presently the Director of JUST CHANGE, an organization dedicated to developing a new fair trade paradigm. He has also worked as a consultant and trainer on community organization, group dynamics, leadership, and other development issues. He is the first trustee of Oxfam GB from a developing country and a visiting fellow at Oxford University's Said Business School's Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship.
