About Scott Simon

Scott Simon Biography

One of the most esteemed authors and broadcasters in America is Scott Simon. From El Salvador to Sarajevo to Afghanistan and Iraq, he has covered all fifty states, five continents, and ten conflicts. He has recorded personalities in war and peace, sports and the arts, tragedies, and comedies throughout his writings. Weekend Edition Saturday, Simon's weekly program, has been hailed as "the most varied, cerebral two hours of programming on the airways" by Brett Martin of Time-Out New York and "the most literary, humorous, moving, and just plain entertaining news show on any dial." Including the Peabody, the Emmy, the Columbia-DuPont, the Ohio State Award, the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award, and the Sidney Hillman Award, he has received every significant honor in broadcasting. For his reporting on Ethiopia's famine and civil conflict, Simon was given the Presidential End Hunger Prize. He also earned a special Peabody Award mention for his weekly pieces, which were praised for being "consistently intellectual, elegant, and challenging." He also made the Human Rights Fund's Barry M. Goldwater Award. He most recently received the Studs Terkel Award. In addition to the PBS programs "State of Mind," "Voices of Vision," and "Need to Know," Simon has presented several other television specials. Both "The Paterson Project" and his two-hour broadcast from the Rio Earth Summit received national Emmys. In collaboration with the BBC, he co-anchored PBS's "Millennium 2000" coverage and co-hosted the broadcast Columbia-DuPont Awards. He has gained popularity among British audiences as the host of a program on the White House press corps and the ongoing BBC series "Eyewitness." All major networks, including the BBC, NBC, CNN, and ESPN, have featured him as a guest and pundit. Among other publications, Simon has written for The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times Book Review, The Wall Street Journal, The Sunday Times of London, The Guardian, and Gourmet. He received a James Beard Award for his essay "War Cuisine" in Gourmet. He holds several honorary degrees. "Extraordinary...uniformly superb...a memoir of such width and reach that it compares well with Fredrick Exley's A Fan's Notebook," wrote Sports Illustrated of his book Home and Away: Memoir of a Fan. Many non-fiction bestseller lists had it at the top. His book won Barnes & Noble's Sports Book of the Year award with Jackie Robinson and the Integration of Baseball. Scott Turow praised his book Beautiful Birds, which tells the tale of two young girls living in Sarajevo during the siege "since Tom Wolfe's, the most promising fiction debut by a notable journalist. Always engaging, always compassionate, and frequently excruciatingly amusing. It is an amazing display of technical skill, keen observation, and a pitch-perfect heart." The Chicago City Council is the setting for Windy City, the second book by Simon. An article highlighting the benefits of adoption, titled Baby, We Were Made for Each Other, was released in August 2010. In the summer of 2013, Simon tweeted his 1.25 million followers from his mother's hospital bed, garnering widespread media attention. In time for Mother's Day 2015, he is finishing a book on their final week together. Son of comedian Ernie Simon and Patricia Lyons Simon, Simon is a native of Chicago. Books, theatre, ballet, British humor, Mexican food, and "bleeding for the Chicago Cubs" are some of his pastimes. In the Ballet Austin rendition of The Nutcracker, he played Mother Ginger.
