About Scott Adams

Scott Adams Biography

The comic strip Dilbert by well-known cartoonist Scott Adams has been copied, posted, downloaded, faxed, and emailed more times than in history. Dilbert, who The San Francisco Examiner dubbed "the cartoon hero of the office," has been syndicated since 1989 and currently appears in 2,000 newspapers in 65 nations and 25 languages. In 1993, Dilbert became the first widely syndicated comic strip to appear on the Internet, and Adams became the first syndicated cartoonist to post his email address in his comic strip. Adams worked for Pacific Bell for eight years and Crocker National Bank for eight years, doing a range of (in his words) "humiliating and poor paying positions." He has also worked as a computer programmer, financial analyst, product manager, commercial lender, budget manager, strategist, project manager, and pseudo-engineer. He was twice held up at gunpoint and robbed as a bank teller. Adams created crude sketches of his coworkers and superiors during this period to pass the time of ineffective meetings. Dilbert, a figure with spectacles, eventually materialized from the doodling. Adams sent several sample Dilbert comics to major cartoon syndicates in 1988. United Feature Syndicate chose Dilbert and gave Adams a contract out of the tens of thousands of entries they received that year. In 1989, Dilbert made its debut in roughly 50 publications. Adams continued to work as a day employee at Pacific Bell until 1995, sketching Dilbert every morning before work at 5 a.m. Adams now spends most of his evenings and the whole day working on Dilbert. He is the vegetarian food firm Scott Adams Foods, Inc.'s CEO and owns two restaurants. More than 20 million copies of the Dilbert books and calendars have been sold, and more than half of Adams' novels have reached the top 100 bestsellers list of The New York Times. Among them are 21 volumes of comic strip reprints from Andrews McMeel. Adams' first full-length hardback book, The Dilbert Principle (HarperCollins, 1996), has sold more than 1.5 million copies. Adams was reared in the Catskill Mountains city of Windham, New York. He has been a resident and employee of California since 1979. He graduated from Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York, with a B.A. in economics, and the University of California, Berkeley awarded him an MBA. He is a licensed hypnotist as well.
