He founded Instructables, an open website that provides instructions for creating various amazing things. He is a supporter of open-source knowledge.

He co-founded many businesses, including Makani Power, Low-Cost Eyewear, Potenco, Squid Labs, and Low-Cost Eyeglasses, where he serves as president and chief scientist. His enterprises have developed a wide range of novel products and materials, including a "smart" rope that can detect its weight and a machine for producing affordable eyeglass lenses using a technique inspired by a water droplet.
