Saskia Sassen concentrates her research and writing on topics like immigration, global cities (including cities and terrorism), new technologies, and changes within the liberal state as a result of the current transnational conditions.

Sassen begins each of the three major projects that make up her 20 years of study with a thesis that challenges conventional wisdom by posing the unexpected and the paradoxical. "The Mobility of Labor and Capital" resulted from her first multi-year effort (Cambridge University Press 1988).
