The Sakyong is the incarnation of Mipham the Great, a well-known Nyingma scholar, meditation teacher, and Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche's oldest son. Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche is a descendant of the Tibetan warrior-king Gesar of Ling and belongs to the Mukpo clan of eastern Tibet.
