Robert Fisk Biography

Robert Fisk, originally from Maidstone, Kent, is an English journalist and writer. He has been the Middle East correspondent for The Independent for over 20 years, based primarily in Beirut. Fisk is known for holding more British and International Journalism awards than any other foreign correspondent and has been voted International Journalist of the Year seven times. He has reported on numerous wars and armed conflicts and is one of the few Western journalists to have interviewed Osama bin Laden, which he did on three occasions between 1993 and 1997. Fisk began his career on the Sunday Express diary column before moving to The Times, where he served as Belfast correspondent during The Troubles and covered the aftermath of the Carnation Revolution in Portugal. He became a Middle East correspondent in 1976 and moved to The Independent in 1989. Fisk has reported on the Northern Ireland troubles, the Lebanese Civil War, the Iranian Revolution, the Soviet War in Afghanistan, the Gulf War, the Bosnian War, the Algerian Civil War, the Kosovo War, the 2001 international intervention in Afghanistan, the invasion of Iraq in 2003, the Arab Spring in 2011, and the ongoing Syrian Civil War. He has lived in Beirut since 1976, remaining throughout the Lebanese Civil War, and was one of the first journalists to visit the scene of the Sabra and Shatila massacre in Lebanon and the Syrian Hama Massacre. Fisk's book "Pity the Nation" on the Lebanese conflict was published in 1990.
