Richard Garwin Biography

Richard L. Garwin is a highly accomplished physicist and IBM Fellow Emeritus at the Thomas J. Watson Research Center. He received his B.S. in Physics from the Case Institute of Technology and his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. Garwin has made notable contributions to nuclear weapon design, low-temperature and nuclear physics, computer elements and systems, communication systems, solid helium behavior, detection of gravitational radiation, and military technology. He has published over 500 papers, been granted 47 U.S. patents, and testified to many Congressional committees. He is a member of several prestigious organizations, including the National Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Medicine, and the Council on Foreign Relations. Garwin has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the National Medal of Science in 2003. He has also consulted the U.S. government on various matters, including arms control and nonproliferation.
