Rajat Gupta is a former consulting firm McKinsey & Company managing director and philanthropist. Gupta was born in Kolkata, India, in 1948 and later moved to the United States to attend Harvard Business School, where he received his MBA in 1973. Gupta joined McKinsey & Company in 1973 and quickly became the firm’s first non-American-born managing director in 1994. In addition to his work at McKinsey, Gupta has served on the boards of several major corporations, including Goldman Sachs, Procter & Gamble, and American Airlines. He was also involved in several philanthropic efforts, including the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, Malaria, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. In 2011, Gupta was charged with insider trading for allegedly passing confidential information to hedge fund manager Raj Rajaratnam. He was convicted in 2012 and sentenced to two years in prison and a $5 million fine. Gupta has maintained his innocence and appealed his conviction, but his appeals were denied.
