Mark Anthony Neal Biography

Mark holds a Doctorate in American Studies from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Neal is a columnist for Africana.com and is a staff writer at SeeingBlack.com and Popmatters.com. He is also a regular contributor to NPR’s “News and Notes with Ed Gordon”.

Neal is the author of four books including the recently released New Black Man, a strong social commentary which puts forth a revolutionary model of black masculinity for the twenty-first century. The novel moves beyond patriarchy to embrace feminism and combat homophobia.

Neal’s first book, What the Music Said: Black Popular Music and Black Public, is described by Dr. Michael Eric Dyson as “one of the most brilliant analyses of the last 50 years of black popular music.” What the Music Said reveals communities under siege, but also communities engaged in various forms of resistance, institution-building, and everyday pleasures. His second book, Soul Babies: Contemporary Black Popular Culture and the Post-Soul Aesthetic, was voted as one of the Top-Ten Books of 2002 by Africana.com.

Songs in the Key of Black Life: A Rhythm and Blues Nation was described by The Washington Post as "creating a dense, sensuous space for a critical cultured black perspective while his most recent work, New Black Man is a manifesto of “progressive” black masculinity.

Neal’s essays have been anthologized into more than half a dozen books, including the 2004 edition of Da Capo Beat Music Writing. His works also appear in the collections Step into a New World: A Global Anthology of the New Black Literature, The Other Side of Nowhere: Jazz, Improvisation and Communities in Dialogue, and Rhythm and Business: The Political Economy of Black Music, among others.

Neal is currently the co-editor of That’s the Joint!: The Hip-Hop Studies Reader while he works on two books-Thug Nigga Intellectual and Street Songs:Post Civil Rights Desire, Coporate America, and the R&B Nation.
