Elzie became a prominent voice in the Black Lives Matter movement following the shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, in August 2014.

She cofounded We The Protesters, an activist group dedicated to racial justice and protesting against police brutality, and she was recently recognized in The Root 100 2015 list for her organizing work and efforts behind Campaign Zero, a comprehensive list of policy demands for criminal justice reform.
