Jerry Brown Biography

Jerry Brown was elected governor of California in 2010. He dramatically cut the budget deficit, improved California's credit ratings, and reduced waste and inefficiencies throughout government. Brown also enacted a historic public safety realignment and raised the state's clean energy goal to 33 percent. He previously held the office of governor for two terms, from 1975 to 1983. Brown has also served as California's attorney general, mayor of Oakland, California secretary of state and a three-time Democratic candidate for president. During the 1980s, Brown led delegations to China and the Soviet Union, spent six months in Japan studying Japanese culture and Buddhist practice, worked with Mother Teresa in India and traveled to Bangladesh as a CARE goodwill ambassador during the floods of 1988. He founded the Oakland School for the Arts and the Oakland Military Institute for grades 6 through 12. Brown received a bachelor's degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and a J.D. from Yale Law School.
