Archie and Ralph, his younger brothers, were his only siblings. Stanton studied journalism and radio arts at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky. He also went to the Pasadena Playhouse in Pasadena, California, to study acting. Stanton is a World War II veteran.
