Frey was born in Detroit on November 6, 1948, and formed his first band, the Mushrooms, in 1966. They quickly became a staple at the area teen club the Hideout, cutting their debut single "Such a Lovely Child" for the club's Hideout Records label, which was produced by another aspiring Detroit rocker, Bob Seger. Frey then joined the folk-rock group the Four of Us before forming two more Detroit adolescent bands, the Subterraneans and the Heavy Metal Kids, before leaving for California in the early 1970s.
