Gary Snyder, in full Gary Sherman Snyder, was born May 8, 1930, in San Francisco, California, U.S. He is an American writer early related to the Beat movement and, from the 1960s, a significant spokesman for the worries of communal living and biological activism. Snyder got the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1975. Snyder was instructed at Reed College (B.A., 1951) in Portland, Oregon, where he became companions with Philip Whalen, a cohort and future Beat poet. Snyder examined human sciences at Indiana University (1951–52) preceding moving to San Francisco, where he lived with Whalen and became companions with Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac. In 1955, Snyder was among the poets who partook in the memorable reading at the Six Gallery at which Ginsberg presented his poem Howl. The next year Snyder headed out to Japan to examine Zen Buddhism. In 1986 he started instructing at the University of California, Davis; he resigned as professor emeritus in 2002. In 2004 Snyder released his first volume of all-new poetry in quite a while, Danger on Peaks, a collection that stays consistent with his previous work by carrying nature into the reader's inward vision. A later collection, This Present Moment, showed up in 2015. A long-lasting supporter of ecological issues, Snyder contended in Back on the Fire: Essays (2007) that forest fires can be valuable and that government activities to battle them frequently neutralize natural cycles. His resulting works of non-fiction incorporated The Great Clod: Notes and Memoirs on Nature and History in East Asia (2016).
