Dylan McDermott Biography

A Golden Globe winner and Emmy nominee Dylan McDermott has found success in film television and theater. When McDermott was a teenager he was encouraged to pursue an acting career by his stepmother the playwright Eve Ensler who began writing roles for him into her plays. McDermott subsequently attended acting school at Fordham University then continued his studies with Sanford Meisner at the Neighborhood Playhouse.
Upon completion of his studies McDermott dove headfirst into the New York theatre scene making his Broadway debut in a 1985 production of Neil Simon’s Biloxi Blues. His impressive portrayal of Wykowski Selridge got him noticed then cast in director John Irvin's raw Vietnam drama Hamburger Hill for which he had to undergo several months of rigorous military training to prepare. McDermott's next film role in 1989's Steel Magnolias pushed him into the spotlight as both the on-and-off-screen love interest of the comely Hollywood newcomer Julia Roberts. In 1993 he played a small but exciting role alongside Clint Eastwood in the critically acclaimed action/drama In the Line of Fire.
McDermott began the role of his career in 1997 playing defense lawyer Bobby Donnell the head of a small Boston law firm which immediately brought him favorable attention and acclaim. In that role McDermott earned a Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama and a nomination for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. The show produced by David E. Kelley became increasingly popular and continued for several seasons winning an Emmy and a Golden Globe in 1999 for best drama series. Since then McDermott has gone on to continued success starring in the TNT drama Dark Blue which he began in 2009. McDermott also starred in the first two seasons of American Horror Story as well as in the CBS television series Hostages and Stalker.
