Denis Leary Biography

Denis Leary attended Emerson College in Boston after a childhood in the 1960s when he tried his hand at acting and writing. He was a founding member of Emerson's Comedy Workshop, and after graduation, he taught at the institution for five years. By that time, he had published many magazine articles and had dabbled in stand-up comedy. He and his wife Ann traveled to London in 1990 to appear on BBC's Paramount City. Ann's water broke that weekend. Their weekend excursion turned into a month-long stay, and Denis, having nothing else to do in London, composed a one-man comedy show. He invited buddies from the United States to come in and write songs for them to play on stage. At the Edinburgh International Arts Festival in Scotland, Leary played No Cure For Cancer with Chris Phillips and Adam Roth on guitar. Despite the considerable backlash over the title, the show received the Critic's Award and was recommended by the BBC Festival. The show was relocated to America the next year, where it was finally filmed and televised on Showtime (No Cure for Cancer (1992) (TV). A book, CD, cassette tape, and DVD were all produced as a result of the presentation. It was also the start of Leary's film career. Since then, he has been in a number of films and has had two television shows of his own.
