Being born 3 months premature, Christy experienced a hearing loss that left her virtually deaf in both ears, although she can hear very minimal sound with the help of a hearing aid. Christy’s mom was determined to give her daughter as much of an advantage as she could. So, at an early age Christy started speech therapy and as a result became proficient at lip reading.

Raised in Aspen, Colorado, with her parents and two brothers, Christy grew fond of the outdoors and nature. Athletically inclined, she learned early on that in order to keep up with her brothers she was going to have to push herself. It wasn’t always easy, however, her determination to succeed in a hearing community was much greater than the desire to be in the background. With the support and encouragement of her family and friends Christy became acquainted with other deaf children at the Aspen Camp School for the Deaf (ACSD). In her teenage years, Christy had a desire to go to a deaf high school located in Washington, D.C. After much consideration, her parents enrolled her in school and the adventure began.
