Chris Froome Biography

Christopher Froome is a British bicyclist who presently competes with the UCI WorldTeam Team Ineos. He has won a number of stage events, including four Tour de France editions (in 2013, 2015, 2016, and 2017), the Giro d'Italia in 2018, and the Vuelta an Espana in 2017. In 2012 and 2016, Froome earned two Olympic bronze medals in road time trials, as well as bronze at the 2017 World Championships. Froome began his road cycling career as a youngster when he relocated to South Africa for education. Back in Kenya, though, he had only ever ridden a mountain bike, having been introduced to the sport by David Kinjah, creator of The Safari Simbaz. Kinjah was an encouragement to Froome, and their practice together in the remote highlands north of Nairobi sparked Froome's current enthusiasm for cycling. Froome found himself lined up for the Tour de France in July 2008, despite the fact that he had just lost his mother to sickness a few weeks before. He finished the Tour, demonstrating great potential in the climbs and time trials, and went on to win the Giro d'Appennino in Italy shortly after. Froome won stage seven and finished second overall in the 2012 Tour de France, riding as a super-domestique for Bradley Wiggins. He retired from the 2014 Tour de France after numerous crashes. He claimed the Critérium du Dauphiné and the Tour de France for the second time in 2015. In 2016, he won his third Tour de France, becoming the first man to successfully defend his championship since Miguel Indurain in 1995. In 2017, he completed his fourth Tour de France, followed by triumphs in the 2017 Vuelta an Espana and the 2018 Giro d'Italia, both of which were his first victories. With these accomplishments, he became the first rider to win the Tour–Vuelta double since the Vuelta was relocated to September, and the first since Bernard Hinault in 1983 to carry all three Grand Tour winners' jerseys at the same time.
