Carmine Romano Biography

Carmine Romano, the American Airlines executive who oversees the company's maintenance bases in Tulsa, Fort Worth and Kansas City, said Tuesday he is retiring Jan. 1.

Now senior vice president of maintenance and engineering, he has spent 41 years in various positions with the company.

Romano, who began working for American as a line mechanic at John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport in New York in 1968, has been a key manager at American's 3.3-million-square-foot Tulsa Maintenance & Engineering Center for more than 20 years.

"Carmine has played a major role in establishing American Airlines as a leader in airline maintenance operations and engineering," said American Chairman and CEO Gerard Arpey.

"Moreover, his devotion to our company and its people have helped us buck the industry trend of outsourcing maintenance to other countries and keep thousands of maintenance jobs in the United States. I know I speak for the entire company in thanking Carmine for his important contributions."
