Barbara A. Block is a Ph.D. graduate of Duke University. Her study focuses on how giant pelagic fish make use of the open ocean. The goal of the research is to figure out how endothermic techniques evolved in tunas, billfishes, and sharks.
Block and her colleagues study the molecular processes that underpin heat production and force production in skeletal muscle, as well as the evolution of endothermy and the physiological ecology of tunas and billfishes. The lab's research is multidisciplinary, incorporating physiology, ecology, and genetics, as well as oceanography and engineering.
