In 2018, Dr. Astrid S. Tuminez was named the seventh president of Utah Valley University, making her the first female president of the university. Tuminez offers a diverse background in academics, charity, technology, and business to UVU. Tuminez was born in an agricultural community in the Philippine province of Iloilo and relocated to the slums of Iloilo City with her parents and six siblings when she was two years old, her parents looking for better educational possibilities for their children. Her schooling eventually led her to Brigham Young University in Utah, where she received a bachelor's degree in international relations and Russian literature summa cum laude in 1986. She holds a master's degree in Soviet Studies from Harvard University (1988) and a Ph.D. in political science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1996). Tuminez was a world leader in the fields of technology and political science before taking on her present role, most recently as an executive at Microsoft, where she headed corporate, external, and legal activities in Southeast Asia. Tuminez is also a former vice dean of research and assistant dean of executive education at the National University of Singapore's Lee Kuan Yew Institution of Public Policy, Asia's foremost public policy school. She has three children with her husband, Jeffrey S. Tolk. She likes jogging, dancing, and martial arts in her leisure time.
