Allan G. Johnson is a nonfiction author, writer, sociologist, public speaker, and workshop presenter who has spent much of his professional life attempting to comprehend the human condition, particularly in regard to concerns of social justice based on gender, racism, and social class. In 39 states, he has lectured at over 200 universities, colleges, firms, and other groups. The Gender Knot: Unraveling Our Patriarchal Legacy, The Forest and the Trees: Sociology as Life, Practice, and Promise (both in new editions in September 2014), and Privilege, Power, and Difference are some of his nonfiction works. His work has been excerpted in a number of anthologies and has been translated into other languages. Allan's approach to social justice is founded on the premise that untangling the tangle of privilege begins with a clear understanding of what privilege is, what it has to do with each of us, and how everyone may view themselves as a part of the change process toward something better. He plots a route based on more than thirty years of research and answers three questions: What are we becoming involved in, and how are we going about it? What are some of the ways that traditional methods of thinking about privilege blind us to what's going on? What can we do to change things? His social justice work is founded on the conviction that privilege structures, as well as the unfairness and unnecessary suffering that they entail, are not unavoidable aspects of human life and that the choices each of us make the matter more than we can ever know. He provides a realistic, empathetic, and approachable guide to comprehending where we are, how we got here, and how we may work together to find a route out.
